Payal Kapadia will give a presentation about her cinematic practice that juxtaposes fiction and non-fiction, thereby trying to arrive at a subjective truth within her work.

Payal Kapadia is a filmmaker from Mumbai. Trained at the Film and Television Institute of India, her non-fiction film A Night of Knowing Nothing premiered at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes in 2021, where it won the Golden Eye Documentary Award. Her first fiction feature film, All We Imagine As Light (2024), is an ode to friendship and Mumbai. It was the first Indian film in the official Cannes selection after a thirty-year absence of submissions from that country, and won the Grand Prix. Other awards include nominations for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film at the 2025 Golden Globes and Best Film at the 2025 Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.

The Rendez-Vous de l’Institut Series is generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

This event will take place in Reid Hall’s Grande Salle Ginsberg-LeClerc, built in 1912 and extensively renovated in 2023 thanks to the generous support of Judith Ginsberg and Paul LeClerc.

This event will be recorded and may be broadcast as part of our SNF Rendez-vous de l’Institut podcast series.
