The Jewish Cemetery of Didymoteicho

What stories can an “invisible” cemetery tell? The Jewish Cemetery of Didymoteicho survives quietly on the edge of the town, long after the community for which it was created disappeared decades ago. Marked by decay, silence, and absence from the life of its town, the cemetery emerges in this exhibition at the Byzantine Museum of Didymoteicho as a site of inquiry, where traces, absences, and fragmentary evidence come together to generate new narratives. Drawing on archival, comparative, and field-based research, the exhibition sheds light on multiple dimensions of this lost community.

Contemporary photographs taken during the SNFPHI project The Jewish Cemetery of Didymoteicho: Between Oblivion and Memory, presented alongside historical documents and other archival materials, invite reflection rather than provide definitive answers. Rather than offering a single, conclusive interpretation, the exhibition encourages visitors to wander, participate in the process of tracing the past, and reconsider the relationship between memory, absence, and place.
