The Disappearing Act
Maria Stepanova
Maria Stepanova’s latest novel The Disappearing Act has been reviewed in several newspapers, including The Financial Times by Matthew Janney, The Guardian by Anna Aslanyan, Télérama by Nathalie Crom, and The New York Times by John Self.
“M, the protagonist in Maria Stepanova’s novel The Disappearing Act, is in a state of flux. She is living in exile travelling on a train to speak at a literary festival. The country she is from — which she calls “the beast” — is “waging war against a neighbouring country”. When her connecting train is cancelled, or rather disappears, M wanders aimlessly in the town of F before eventually volunteering to be sawn in half as part of a circus trick.”
