“I consider Lewis the epitome of Afrofuturism—he enacts the “ancient to the future” motto of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a vital Black arts organization with which he’s been involved since 1971. He’s never lost his mooring in jazz, a quintessentially Black art form, but he’s constantly looking forward, expanding his sound with cutting-edge technology, chance-driven elements, and new philosophies. And he does all this with a playfulness that keeps him from sounding stodgy and impenetrable—he combines his iconoclasm with inviting warmth.”
