Lines of Belonging
Sabelo Mlangeni is a featured artist of the MoMA’s latest exhibition New Photography 2025: Lines of Belonging which is on view in New York until January 17, 2026.
“As a photographer, I focus on long-term projects, producing photo essays, stories, and other bodies of work by returning to communities of family and friends. I now associate this “returning” with a sense of meditation, and make work around intimacy by bringing my camera into spaces over and over again. The result of this is that a photograph never lies. This is not a total truth, but here I am talking about the ways an image can capture atmosphere. What is revealed in this atmosphere are layers of intimacy. This is how you begin to categorize these encounters. This is where an image is born.”
