History of Violence

Édouard Louis’ autobiographical novel History of Violence is being staged by Thomas Ostermeier and the Schaubühne Berlin at the Adelaide Festival in Adelaide, Australia, from February 27 to March 2, 2026.

The production revisits Louis’ account of a chance encounter in Paris that turns violently traumatic, unfolding through fragmented perspectives: those of Édouard, his sister, the police, and doctors. Blending intimacy, memory, and political reflection, the play confronts questions of race, queerness, desire, and the lingering reverberations of violence.
