Emeka Ogboh: Akwétè

The Cleveland Museum of Art is presenting Akwétè (2019) by Emeka Ogboh through December 1st, 2019.

This film illustrates the making of the celebrated traditional West African akwétè cloth. Made exclusively by women, akwétè is often made with strong colored and intricate patterns. Colored fabrics with striking patterns are worn on ceremonial and festive occasions—including at the ámà, or village square. Ogboh was commissioned to do a site-specific installation at the museum’s Ames Family Atrium using the same akwétè cloths that are featured in this video.
