Duff Cooper Prize

Mark Mazower

Mark Mazower was awarded the 2021 Duff Cooper Prize for The Greek Revolution: 1821 and the Making of Modern Europe (Allen Lane, 2021).

“In her speech announcing the winner, Artemis Cooper praised Mazower for ‘never losing control of the international dimension of this extremely complex story. At the same time, he is on the ground with the terrorized communities of defenceless Greek peasants and farmers, left to face wave after wave of Ottoman invaders.’ In March 2022, when our thoughts are never far from the appalling destruction of Ukraine, it is worth being reminded that the Greek struggle for independence refused to be crushed – and succeeded, against overwhelming odds.”
