Recalling Patrick Leigh Fermor
During a retreat that brought together Institute Fellows with SNF Public Humanities Initiative awardees and the Benaki Museum in Kardamyli, II&I Director Mark Mazower and Patrick Leigh Fermor’s biographer Artemis Cooper had a conversation about Leigh Fermor and the house that he built.
Mark Mazower is the SNF Director of the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination and Ira D. Wallach Professor of History at Columbia University. He read classics and philosophy at Oxford and has a PhD in History from the same university. He has written several books of which the most recent is The Greek Revolution: 1821 and the Making of Modern Europe (2021).
Artemis Cooper, FRSL, has a degree in English from Oxford University. She is a biographer and historian. Her first book was a collection of the letters of her grandparents, Duff and Diana Cooper. Among her other works are studies of Cairo and Paris in the 1940s, a biography of Elizabeth David and several books on Patrick Leigh Fermor.
